Squad receives $1,226

The Princeton first aid squad is getting a new pair of trousers —  “shock trauma” trousers, that is — thanks to Mercer County.

The county has contributed a total of $10,500 to Princeton and nine other area rescue squads that offer advanced life support services.

Assistant county administrator Margaret Perry said the funding was included as a “one-time” appropriation in the county’s 1985 budget to aid area rescue squads that are certified in advanced life support by the state – are equipped with mobile intensive care units.

The funding, which is offered in addition to the $1,500 the county contributes to all municipal first aid units, is to be used specifically for equipment, Ms. Perry said.

Under the arrangement, the Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad will receive one of the largest allotment, $1,226. Squad Capt. Mark Freda said this money has been targeted to buy a new “mast trouser,” a specially designed two-piece pants used on patients suffering from heavy trauma.

Mr. Freda explained the device is put on the injured person and is pumped up to provide pressure that forces blood to the upper part of the body.

Any remaining funds will go toward maintenance of the squads existing equipment, Mr. Freda said.

The Rusling Hose Ambulance and Corps. Rescue Squad of Hamilton will also receive $1,226. The Hopewell Fire Department and Emergency Squad will gain $889. while Lawrence Township Emergency First Aid will be rewarded $975.

East Windsor Township Rescue Squads Nos. 1, and 2 will receive a combined contribution of $1,933. The Pennington Road and Pennington Borough First Aid squads will get $1,906.

Yardville First Aid Squad Inc. is in line for $1,125, and the Nottingham Ambulance Squad Ink. will receive $1,220.
