CAR DAMAGED BY FIRE
Leaking Brake Fluid Blamed. Leaking brake fluid, which spilled over onto a hot engine is being blamed for a fire Monday morning that extensively damaged a car operated by Marian H. Callighan, 4 Quarry Lane.
Ms. Callighan told police that she was returning home from shopping shortly before 10 and was about to enter her driveway when she noticed that her brakes were not working properly. She was able to stop her 1968 sedan, smelled something burning and then saw smoke coming out from under the car’s hood.
Two fire engines and 12 firemen responded to a call from a neighbor and extinguished the fire, but not before it caused extensive damage to the engine compartment. Police said that they believe faulty brakes allowed the fluid to leak out.
