Firemen to March

The Princeton Firemen’s Annual inspection Parade will be held Friday, June 29 starting at 7 p.m. at the corner of Nassau anti Chestnut Streets. The parade will go west on Nassau Street to Borough Hall.

Ceremonies afterward will include awards for members’ having more than 25 years of active service with the department. An inspection by Borough Council and Township Committee will follow.

The parade will include the three fire companies that make -up the Princeton Fire Department Mercer Engine Co. No. 3, Princeton Engine Co. No. 1, and Princeton Hook and Ladder, the Princeton First Aid Squad, Ladies Auxiliary marching units, and three bands.

The first fireman’s inspection by the governing body was requested by Fire Chief John J. Stryker on July 5, 1884. Ir was held on July 10 in front of Mercer Hall. (on Nassau Street. between Tulane Street and Allen’s.) The Fire Department at this time showed off some of its newest equipment, such as canvas jackets, rubber hoses and an 1883 Rumsey  and Company horse-drawn ladder truck. In 1883, the fast fut hydrants were installed and an area newspaper commented that the “roads were once again passable” now that the work was complete.

This year’s parade will include Princeton Engine Co. No. l’s new pumper, which went into service in April: 1989. It features a six-man cab, 1750 G.P.M. pump, top-mounted pump panel, and automatic transmission.
